The trees being planted in this site are native Madagascan mangrove species, including Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, and Ceriops tagal.These mangrove forests are not only crucial carbon sinks, they also provide habitats for a wide range of marine species that live in the shallows, and provide vital coastal protection from floods and storms. Coastal wetlands can store five times as much carbon as tropical forests over the long term.

Historically home to vast mangrove estuaries and forests, Mozambique’s forests have been largely decimated and destroyed due to intensive tree-cutting for firewood and charcoal.
